My RECENT works

MeDieval gaze

This painting captures a contemplative, bearded medieval man in profile, set against the expressive, abstracted silhouette of Valletta. Rendered in vivid brushstrokes of blues, oranges, and monochromatic shades, the man's introspective gaze and the dream-like hues around him suggest a deep engagement with his thoughts.

Valletta's iconic coastal skyline, punctuated by a church spire, anchors the composition in a historical European context, providing a striking contrast to the man's fragmented representation. The blend of sharp architectural realism and the figure's stylized portrayal creates a vibrant tension, evoking the layered essence of medieval times.

Renaissance Whisper

This evocative painting presents a woman in profile against the timeless backdrop of Valletta. Her features are depicted with a harmonious blend of cool blues and warm oranges, creating a visual symphony that echoes the rich hues of the Renaissance era. The woman's expression, characterised by a pensive gaze, seems to carry the subtle intonations of a whisper from that influential period of rebirth and artistry.

Behind her, the historic architecture of Valletta is suggested in blocks of color and light, capturing the essence of the city's baroque buildings and ancient stonework. There is a narrative depth in the woman’s eyes, reflecting a yearning for a distant past, perhaps musing over a lost love whose memory lingers like a shadow. The use of bold, expressive colour and form encapsulates a moment frozen in time.

CARAVAGGIO

Shadows of Malta

This painting captures the essence of Caravaggio during his tumultuous stay in Malta, a period marked by both prestige and peril. The stark contrasts and intense chiaroscuro that characterize his own work are reflected in this portrait, with Caravaggio's brooding expression suggesting inner turmoil.

As he stands in the fore, two figures are seen in the balconies behind, evoking the scrutiny and judgment he faced from the Knights of Malta. The somber palette and the heavy, textured brushstrokes convey the weight of his experiences in this Mediterranean isle where he found both refuge and conflict.

LORD BYRON

Lord Byron in Malta

At the age of twenty-something, Lord George Gordon Byron is depicted in a moment of reflective pause on the storied streets of Valletta. This painting captures the romantic poet's fiery spirit and contemplative gaze as he beholds the ancient beauty of the island. The warm Maltese architecture frames his silhouette, casting shadows that play upon his features, mirroring the complexities of his character and the depth of his thoughts.

His disheveled curls and the windswept collar speak to the untamed nature of both the man and the poet. The rich, earthy tones of Malta's stony facades contrast sharply with the vibrant red of Byron's scarf, a symbol of his passion and vitality. There's an intensity in his eyes, a yearning for adventure and the embrace of the sublime, qualities that defined Byron and his work.

This painting portrays Grand Master Jean Parisot de la Valette, a significant historical figure known for his role in the defense of Malta during the Great Siege of 1565. The portrait captures him in a dignified and regal manner, emphasizing his leadership and strength. The Grand Master is depicted with a commanding presence, his face characterized by a well-defined, weathered complexion and a striking white beard and hair. His expression is one of solemnity and wisdom, reflecting his age and experience. He wears a lavish, high-collared garment adorned with a chain of office that features intricate designs and a prominent cross, symbolizing his high rank within the Order of St. John.
